The system of education is in Poland





Nowadays there are more than 450 universities in Poland, that offer students education in more than 200 specialties. About 2 million students are studying at Polish universities. According to this index Poland is at the fourth place in the European Union.
During 2012-2013 academic years about 12 000 Ukrainian students were studying in Poland.



There are two types of institutes of higher education in Poland: national and private. All institutes of higher education are divided according to the profile into: classical universities, technical, medical, military, etc. Only those institutes of higher education can be called universities, which are authorized to bestow doctors' grade (PhD), all other are called high schools, academies, etc.


The academic year starts 1st October or 1st March in Poland. It is a convenience and difference in Polish system of high education from ours. Those university entrants can start their studies in spring, who didn’t do it in autumn because of some reasons. 

Thus the entrance campaign continuously endures almost the whole year. We recommend to keep to those terms of presenting documents, that are given below:

  • for those who want to study from 1st October – till 15th August;
  • for those who want to study from 1st March – till 15th January.



Graduating students are bestowed the follows academic grades


Terms of education


Bachelor (Licencjat, BA)

3-3,5 year

Grade of bachelor lets you get basic professional skills of a specialist in your field. After getting grade of bachelor you can look for a job at the enterprises of the country or continue your education.

Bachelor (Inzyneir, BSc)

3,5-4 years

Grade is bestowed after education at the technical institute of higher education on economical, technical or agricultural specialty. It is also considered complete higher education.

Master (Magister, MA, MSc) on the base of diploma of bachelor

1,5-2 years

Grade is bestowed after education at the institute of higher education, on the base of diploma of bachelor. Education of Master (or equivalent grade, which depends on the field of education, for example, master-engineer) is mainly concentrated on obtaining theoretical knowledge and developing creative capabilities of a student. Having got grade of master you are given green light in obtaining grade of

Master (Magister) on the base of school certificate

4,5-6 years

This grade is bestowed after education, on the base of school certificate. It is available only for a number of specialties (medicine, jurisprudence, pharmacology, psychology, etc.), where you need time not only to obtain basic skills, but profound mastering of the specialty as well.


Education can be full-time, part-time, extramural, and distance. The first two forms are more popular.
Within full-time form of education (fixed) students attend classes on week days, 3-5 days a week. In other words, education occupies about 30 hours a week. Saturday and Sunday are free from education days. Very often students have 1 day per week for self education, visiting libraries and work in the internet.
Within extramural form of education students attend lectures 2 times a month on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Extramural form of education almost doesn’t differ from full-time form if compare amount of hours and intensity of education in each form.


The academic year consists of two terms: autumn and spring. Autumn term endures from October till the end of January. Winter term endures from the end of February till the middle of June. There is an examination session at the end of each term. The total duration of the academic year is about 30 weeks.


The educational cause consists of lectures, practical classes, seminars. Lectures and practical classes are very interesting for students because they are actively drawn into the process of discussion, consideration, solving cases, tasks, etc.
Every university fixes its own system of estimating students’ knowledge. The most popular system is the following one:

  • excellent (5);
  • very good (4,5);
  • good (4);
  • fare (3,5);
  • adequate (3);
  • poor (2).

Education in Polish universities can be in Polish as well as in English. Education in English is getting more and more popular in the country. Every year universities open new courses and specialties available for studying in English.

Cost of education in Polish universities starts from 1000 euro per year. One year of education in English in university will cost about 2000-2500 euro per year. At the same time the quality of education in very high. Polish system of higher education is considered one of the best systems in the world due to its quality.

Diplomas of Polish institutes of higher education are admitted in most of the countries of Europe. They don’t need any additional acknowledgement.
In Ukraine diplomas of Polish Institutes of higher education are admitted on the base of agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of the Republic of Poland “About Academic Interdetermination of Educational Certificates and Equality of the Grades”.

Poland joined the Bologna process in 1999. The country with other 29 states of Europe has reformed its system of education to correspond the requirements of the All-European System.
European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is adopted and used in Poland, which should facilitate the procedure of comparing levels of students’ trainings from different countries on the same specialties. Also Polish universities are involved into international exchange of students on such programs as SOCRATES/Erasmus. These programs let students study in any university of Europe up to 1 year.
